Australia: Rooftop solar to meet 77% of electricity demand by 2026
Rooftop solar in Australia's National Electricity Market (NEM) could meet 77 percent of potential demand by 2026, surpassing the previous record of 35 percent set last October, the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) said in its annual reliability outlook report on Tuesday. By 2025, Australian homes will have an additional 8.9 gigawatts of solar panels on top of the current 14 gigawatts.
With 30 percent of homes installed with solar, Australia has the world's most fragmented energy market, according to Bloom berg NEF, making it a case study of how power grids around the world are transitioning from conventional to new sources of electricity. AEMO said the move could have a bigger impact locally, with South Australia likely to become the first major grid in the world to meet 100 per cent of its needs from home solar by the end of November.
"NEM is leading the global growth in distributed PV," AEMO said. While these developments challenge the limitations of current power systems, they also present opportunities for groundbreaking market frameworks that offer new benefits to consumers and demonstrate the world's first PV power system in operation."
'Coupled with the introduction of coal-fired power plants and the growth of hydrogen development, home solar is accelerating the transition to a new energy model,' AEMO said. AEMO added that it did not expect a reliability gap in the next five years. The NEM does not include the regions of Western Australia and Northern Australia, nor does it include Tasmania.
